This past Monday in the Indianapolis office, Wright State starting guard Alex Huibregtse was named the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. A redshirt senior from Grafton, Wisconsin, Huibregtse turned in a trio of prolific shooting displays while leading his team to winning two of their first three games in the first week of the 2024-25 college basketball season.

Huibregtse begun the season scoring 16 in the Raiders’ 103-62 blowout loss on November 4th at 23rd-ranked Kentucky. Then, he dropped 22 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field in last Wednesday’s home-opening 90-69 win against Ohio Christian. Then to top it all off, he ended the week with a bang by torching in-state rival Miami University with 26 big ones while knocking down 11 of his 16 shot attempts during this past Saturday’s 81-68 road win in Oxford with 18 of those 26 points coming in the second half.

Huibregtse went 2-for-7 on three-pointers at Kentucky, but he ended up going an efficient 4-of-6 from beyond the arc against both Ohio Christian and Miami University. He finished the week averaging 21.3 points, knocking down 64.1 percent of his shots overall (25-of-39) and 52.6 percent of his three-point tries (10-of-19). He also tallied up a total of 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals all while only turning the ball over twice.

Dating back to last season, Huibregtse has now recorded 12 straight games in which he has scored in double figures. As a result of his 20-plus point games last week against Ohio Christian and MIami University, that gives him nine occurences in which he has scored 20 or more points in his five-year Raider career. His 26 points on Saturday are the second-most he has ever put up in a game. His career-high in points is 32, which occured last season in Wright State’s 107-99 overtime victory at Cleveland State on January 25.

Huibregtse and the Raiders will try to continue their winning ways with two games this week: a Wednesday game at another in-state rival at Toledo (1-1) who is coming off a Saturday road win of their own at Marshall, followed by a Saturday night contest at home against Central State. Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm tip-offs.
