The IU Indy/UIndy kerfuffle is laughable considering the fact that UIndy has made zero inclination to ever come to Division I, and the fact that they voluntarily chose to call themselves UIndy over just Indy or Indy U, whereas everyone would have inevitably shorted IU Indianapolis to IU Indy by default, proves that while UIndy could win the lawsuit by having established the branding first, it’s something that they will likely lose out on long term despite the Ooey No Longer Pooey coming along later. The irony here is that the University of Indianapolis has historically had a successful athletic department with one national championship in women’s lacrosse while IU Indy is by and by a commuter school focused on getting students into medicine or general research with zero school pride and thus still has no support in athletics (it took nearly 30 years in Division I to finally get an actual arena on-campus with modern amenities for student athletes, and other facilities like softball are still laughably awful with one winning season to show as a result).
