Fort Wayne, IN – Purdue Fort Wayne women’s basketball opened its 2026-27 season with plenty of encouraging moments, but a dominant performance from Xavier guard Lucile Jerome and a difficult second quarter proved too much for the Mastodons to overcome. The French Musketeer tallied a game and (collegiate) career-high 28 points on 12-for-21 shooting in 37 minutes of play to lead Xavier to a 75-63 win over the Mastodons and spoiling the regular season debut of the Kate Peterson-Abiad era in Fort Wayne.

Avery Wagner led the way for Purdue Fort Wayne with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Nika Lokica showed she regained the responsibility to take on an expanded role in the Mastodons’ backcourt after last year’s limiting of minutes. Lokica added 15 points of her own in a team high 36 minutes on the floor. Her ability to create offense and maintain an aggressive approach was encouraging. With more time at the starting point guard position, Lokica could become an increasingly important piece of the Mastodons’ offensive identity.

Wagner established herself as one of Purdue Fort Wayne’s most reliable options from the opening minutes. The 6-4 sophomore forward scored 10 points in the first quarter alone, shooting 3-of-4 from the field and knocking down both of her three-point attempts. Her impact extended well beyond scoring. Wagner grabbed offensive rebounds, created opportunities for teammates and made her presence felt defensively. She helped the Mastodons secure an early lead by tipping in a missed shot and assisting on Meegan Fahy’s driving layup. Wagner also provided a defensive highlight late in the opening quarter, blocking Xavier’s Morgan Jenkins’ attempt at the rim before collecting the rebound. She finished the quarter by drawing a foul and converting both free throws, helping Purdue Fort Wayne take a 21-17 advantage into the second period.

The game was decided by Xavier’s ability to dictate the pace, capitalize on defensive breakdowns, and turn opportunities into points. The Musketeers scored 15 fast-break points compared to just five for Purdue Fort Wayne and held a significant 34-22 advantage in points in the paint. The Mastodons committed 17 turnovers while only being able to force Xavier into eight of their own. Of the 17 PFW turnovers, 10 of those ended up going quickly the other way as a result of a Xavier steal.

Purdue Fort Wayne’s opening quarter offered a glimpse of what the team could accomplish offensively. The Mastodons shot 58.3% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range, moving the ball effectively and finding opportunities in transition. As a team, the Mastodons dished out six of their total 12 assists in the first frame. Wagner, Lokica, and Claire Gregwer all played the entire 10 minutes of the first quarter. Defensively, the ‘Dons showed plenty of promise as well. Though allowing 17 points in a quarter could be better, the Mastodons held the Musketeers in check from deep in the first 10 minutes. Xavier ended the first quarter only making one three-pointer on eight attempts. Jerome would be the only Musketeer to be positive in the +/- column in the first quarter with a +3 scoring differential during her time on the court.

The second quarter told an overall different story and can lead to plenty of concerns for Mastodon fans.

Xavier outscored Purdue Fort Wayne 26-13, shooting 45.5% from the field while holding the Mastodons to 4-of-12 shooting. The Musketeers repeatedly attacked the paint and capitalized on defensive miscues, producing 11 fast-break points in the second period alone. Purdue Fort Wayne started to see some contributions from its supporting cast. Amaris Timmons scored five points in the game, including a three-pointer late in the second quarter, while Alyssa Berry converted free throws to help the Mastodons stay within reach. However, Xavier’s offensive rhythm proved difficult to disrupt. The Musketeers entered halftime with a nine-point 43-34 lead after doubling up PFW in the period.

The Mastodons did not fold after halftime. Purdue Fort Wayne shot 53.8% from the field in the third quarter, matching Xavier’s physicality and finding more success attacking the basket. For a moment, Purdue Fort Wayne had momentum. Lokica’s early scoring helped spark the push, while Gregwer contributed a pair of baskets. The Mastodons gradually chipped away at the deficit, and Lokica’s three-pointer at the 4:48 mark cut Xavier’s lead to 49-45. Xavier’s ability to respond to each Purdue Fort Wayne run prevented the home team from making the game a one-possession contest. Jerome quickly helped Xavier regain control, however, answering with a driving basket before adding another jumper. The Musketeers also received timely contributions from Hila Karsh and Kodee Williams-Sefo, who hit a three-pointer during the closing minutes of the quarter. Karsh, who was a member of the Purdue Boilermakers last season who lost to the Mastodons on the same floor last year, likely did not want to experience any déjà vu in Gates Sports Center.

Purdue Fort Wayne’s Wagner continued to battle on the glass, securing an offensive rebound and converting a second-chance jumper late in the period. Even so, Xavier maintained its advantage and carried a 61-49 lead into the fourth quarter.

Xavier opened the fourth quarter by extending its lead to 16 points, putting Purdue Fort Wayne in a difficult position with time running out.

The Mastodons continued to compete. Wagner converted two free throws, Maddie Lepley knocked down a three-pointer, and Gregwer added a jumper to help trim the deficit. Wagner also came up with a steal and drew another foul while attempting to keep Purdue Fort Wayne within striking distance; Unfortunately for Mastodon fans, Xavier consistently answered the Mastodons’ scoring bursts. Meri Kanerva connected on a three-pointer with 4:30 remaining, and Jerome followed with a transition layup after another turnover. Those baskets pushed the lead back to 15 points and effectively ended Purdue Fort Wayne’s comeback hopes. Karis Thomas added a late basket for the Mastodons, and Lokica scored again before converting two free throws in the final minute. Purdue Fort Wayne matched Xavier with 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the earlier deficit proved too large to overcome.

Despite the loss, Purdue Fort Wayne showed several positive signs in its season opener. Wagner demonstrated the value of an experienced, versatile forward, and Lokica’s expanded role at point guard offered an encouraging glimpse of the team’s backcourt possibilities. The Mastodons will need to find greater consistency across all four quarters, particularly in limiting turnovers and preventing opponents from generating transition offense. Their second-quarter struggles against Xavier proved costly, even as their third-quarter response showed an ability to compete.

Purdue Fort Wayne will look to build on those positives when it returns to action Friday, November 6, against DePaul at Wintrust Arena. DePaul opens their season on November 3 with a home game against another Indiana opponent in the Evansville Purple Aces. The matchup between Blue Demons and the Mastodons is slated to tip off at 12 PM eastern and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
