Northern Kentucky opened its 2026–27 season in dominant fashion Monday night, defeating Defiance College 84–49 at Truist Arena. Coming off a 90–57 exhibition win over Midway, the Lady Norse carried that momentum straight into their home opener, using a fast start, balanced scoring, and suffocating defense to begin the year 1–0.
NKU wasted no time establishing control. Maya Layton, making her Norse debut, knocked down back‑to‑back three‑pointers to give Northern Kentucky an early 6–0 lead with 7:31 left in the first quarter. She added two free throws moments later, pushing the advantage to 8–2.
Layton continued her hot start with a third three‑pointer at the 5:53 mark, extending the lead to 11–4. Her early scoring burst set the tone for a Norse offense that dictated pace and spacing throughout the opening period.
NKU’s depth quickly became a factor. Alma Rashelbach knocked down two free throws and scored in transition to make it 16–8 with 2:53 left. As Defiance struggled to generate offense, the Norse kept attacking.
Anna Hamilton and Gaia Castelli each converted layups, and Castelli added a jumper to cap a 10–2 run that put NKU ahead 22–10 after the first quarter.
Both teams opened the second quarter scoreless for two minutes until Defiance’s Dakota Graham hit two free throws and a fast‑break layup to cut the deficit to 22–13. NKU responded immediately as Hamilton buried a three‑pointer.
Graham added another jumper for Defiance, but Castelli answered with a layup to keep NKU in control.
After another three‑minute scoring lull, the Norse closed the half with a decisive push. Dzenifera Rieksta scored inside, Castelli added two free throws, Layton knocked down her fourth three‑pointer of the night and followed with a layup, and Sara Basaran closed the half with two free throws. NKU entered halftime leading 38–20 after a 9–3 run.
Defiance opened the third quarter with a three‑pointer from Taylor Haynes, but Northern Kentucky quickly reasserted control. Basaran scored two layups to stretch the lead to 43–23.
Defiance produced its strongest quarter of the night, scoring 20 points and trimming the deficit to 13 with 2:51 left after a jumper from K’lynn Carter. But NKU responded with another decisive run.
Rashelbach scored in transition, Caroline Eaglin knocked down a three‑pointer, Castelli added a fast‑break jumper, and Kennedy Younkin scored inside to push the lead back to 62–42. Eaglin closed the quarter with a free throw and a layup, giving Northern Kentucky a 65–43 advantage after a 12–3 run.
NKU’s defense dominated the final period, holding Defiance to just six points. Northern Kentucky opened the quarter on a 12–0 run, sealing the victory and putting an exclamation point on a commanding season opener.
The Norse went 30-77 from the field, 9-34 from 3-point range, 58 rebounds, and 15-19 from the free throw line.
