Northern Kentucky’s strong 2–0 start came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night, as the Lady Norse suffered their first loss of the season in a 79–28 defeat to No. 14 Kentucky in Lexington. The Wildcats controlled the game from the opening tip, using defensive pressure, rebounding dominance, and a relentless scoring pace to overwhelm NKU.
Kentucky opened the game on a 9–0 run with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter, beginning with a free throw from Me’Arah O’Neal. Asja Sivka and O’Neal each added two layups in the paint as NKU struggled to settle in, committing four turnovers in the opening minutes and forcing head coach Jeff Hans to call an early timeout. Northern Kentucky finally broke through after a steal from Gala Castelli led to a Maya Layton three‑pointer with 5:44 left in the quarter, but it would be the team’s only field goal of the period. Kentucky closed the quarter on a 16–0 run, building a 25–3 lead as NKU committed 10 turnovers in the opening frame.
The Wildcats continued their momentum into the second quarter. Sivka opened with a jumper, followed by a three‑pointer from Asia Boone that extended the lead to 36–5 with 5:11 remaining. NKU added a free throw from Sara Basaran, and Madlyn Greenway followed with another for Kentucky before the Norse pieced together their best stretch of the half—five straight points from Basaran and Ema Mackic—to cut the deficit to 37–11. Kentucky quickly responded as Boone knocked down another three and added two free throws, sending the Wildcats into halftime with a commanding 42–12 advantage.
Kentucky showed no signs of slowing down in the third quarter, opening with a 7–0 run. Sivka converted a layup, Boone hit another three, and O’Neal added a jumper to push the lead to 49–12 with 7:13 left. O’Neal and Savannah Swords each knocked down a pair of three‑pointers to extend the margin to 55–13 with 3:19 remaining. Northern Kentucky responded with its strongest sequence of the night, a 7–0 run fueled by four straight free throws from Anna Hamilton, a layup from Rieksta Dzenifera, and two free throws from Caroline Eaglin to make it 55–21. Kentucky closed the quarter with another Boone three, taking a 58–21 lead into the fourth.
Boone opened the final quarter with a three‑pointer and a jumper, followed by another Sivka three and a Boone layup to push Kentucky’s lead to 68–21 with 7:38 remaining. Hamilton scored NKU’s first points of the quarter with a pair of free throws, but Clara Strack answered with two of her own. Basaran added two more free throws for the Norse before Emily McDonald scored inside and Ayanna Patterson added a free throw to make it 73–25 with 5:16 left. Patterson went three‑for‑four at the line in the closing minutes, and Jemma Amoore knocked down a three‑pointer to secure Kentucky’s 79–28 victory and a 2–0 start to its season.
Northern Kentucky finished 6‑for‑44 from the field, 2‑for‑20 from three‑point range, and 14‑for‑18 at the free‑throw line. Kentucky shot 27‑for‑79 overall, 9‑for‑35 from deep, and 16‑for‑26 at the line. The Wildcats dominated the turnover battle 28–10 and outrebounded NKU 60–34.
