The Wright State Raiders women’s basketball team (2-12, 0-4 Horizon) did not stand a chance against the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons (9-5, 4-0 Horizon) and suffered a 76-49 beatdown at the Nutter Center. It’s Wright State’s eighth straight defeat, which is their longest losing streak since 2003-04. They have now dropped to 11th and last place in the Horizon League, while Purdue-Fort Wayne is now in first place by themselves atop the standings.

After the 1st quarter, Kari Hoffman’s crew trailed 18-10 and only made 25 percent of their shots (4-of-16).

In the 2nd quarter, the Mastodons went on an elephant stampede and shaped up the habitat in a hurry by outscoring the Raiders 25-5 and even dropped 14 unanswered points. During that time, Maria Marchesano and her squad also held WSU without a single point for 5 minutes and 18 seconds as they took a 43-15 lead going into halftime.

The Raiders had a much better 2nd half as they outscored the ‘Dons 34-33 over the last 20 minutes, shooting 40 percent from the floor (12-of-30) and 42.9 percent from downtown (3-of-8). Nevertheless, Purdue-Fort Wayne won by 27, never trailed in the afternoon, outrebounded Wright State 46-37, and are now winners of 6 straight games – which is the first time they have done that since 2010-11.

Wright State only had 9 healthy bodies available for the day since their backup post players, Chloe Chard Peloquin and Florrie Cotterill, both sat out due to ankle injuries. Hoffman’s bunch did not have a single player score in double-figures. 9 points each for Makiya Miller and Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, 7 points each for Lauren Scott and Macie Taylor, and 4 points each for Amaya Staton and Claire Henson. Miller and Henson each pulled down 5 rebounds, while Staton grabbed 7 boards and blocked 3 shots. Henson also led the game with 8 of WSU’s 20 turnovers, while Magestro-Kennedy had all 9 of her points in the 4th quarter and went 3-of-5 from behind the arc on the day.

WSU did good from the foul line yet again at 83.3 percent (10-of-12), but they shot a poor 29.3 percent overall from the floor (17-of-58) and 31.3 percent from downtown (5-of-16).

The ‘Dons were led by grad student Amellia Bromenschenkel, whom teammates call “Millie,” with 16 points and 6 rebounds. With those 6 boards, Bromenschenkel has 632 career rebounds, which passes Verea Bibbs (630) for the most in the school’s NCAA Division I era and 4th-most overall in program history.

Sydney Freeman and Lauren Ross contributed with 12 points apiece, while Audra Emmerson and Renna Schwieterman each had 9 points as well. Jazzlyn Linbo had a good all-around game with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 blocks.

PFW ended the afternoon with a field goal percentage of 41.5 percent (27-of-65), a poor 3-point percentage of 28.6 percent (8-of-28), and a solid 73.7 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-19).

Up next: Wright State will kick off 2025 with a road trip up north to the state of Wisconsin for a battle against former Raider Kacee Baumhower and the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on Thursday, January 2 at 7ET/6CT at the Klotsche Center.
