The calendar has turned to 2026, and while many people out there are making resolutions for the new year, one thing has remained the same: Green Bay women’s basketball is still the team to beat in the Horizon League. Following a hard fought win over Cleveland State, one that was well documented on both sides by our own Kyle Rossi at this link, the Phoenix were able to coast to a win over Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Colonials 64 to 43.
Green Bay got off to a great start early, a 10-0 run over the first eight minutes of the ballgame. The Phoenix got buckets from four different players in that run, before seeing the Colonials close the gap on a 6-0 run to end the opening quarter. Jenna Guyer hit a pair of threes in the opening minutes of the second quarter, before Maddy Skorupski converted an old fashioned three-point play. Guyer was good from long range again, increasing the advantage to 24-6 before RMU got on the board in the quarter. Gracie Grzesk answered the bucket on the Phoenix end, prompting another Green Bay run, with an 8-0 advantage before the Colonials got the final bucket of the half from Myriam Traore. All in all, it was a 22-4 advantage in the second, taking a 32-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Robert Morris was able to keep pace with the Phoenix for much of the third, trading buckets early on in the period. Green Bay flirted with grabbing a 30-point advantage late in third, building their advantage to as much as 29 points before the Colonials worked to shrink the gap down prior to the start of the final period. While momentum could have been turning towards RMU, Green Bay freshman Kristina Ouimette launched a long three in the closing seconds of the third to give the Phoenix a 53 to 27 lead ahead of the final quarter. Green Bay was able to build the lead up to 30 in the opening minute, following a pair of free throws from Carley Duffney and a Skorupski layup. Coach Karius was able to get deeper into her bench in the later minutes of the game, earning minutes for Lily Hansford, Kallie Peppler, Madison Hoffmann, and Julianna Ouimette, with Ouimette and Hansford each getting into the scoring column.
Guyer led all scorers in the contest with 19 points, being joined in double figures by Skorupski’s 11 points. For her efforts, Guyer was named last week’s Horizon League Player of the Week, part of a 3-0 week for the Phoenix. In that run, Guyer averaged 18.3 points and 5.6 rebounds. Guyer’s recognition marks the first individual award for the Phoenix. With their latest win, Green Bay moved to 6-0 in Horizon League play, and 11-5 overall.
The Phoenix will be back in action during their annual trip to the Detroit metro area, facing the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Thursday evening with a 5:30 PM CT tipoff, followed by a Saturday matinee contest against Detroit Mercy.
