NKU Athletics had an important meeting yesterday, but the outcome isn’t as bleak as it may have seemed. The Athletics budget for this year reflects a change closer to 3% rather than the original 35% originally reported, according to Corey Best, the chief communications officer at NKU. Best says that this change will not impact NKU’s division I status.
“There is absolutely no consideration of NKU being anything other a Division I program.” Best said.
Best added that the reported changes to scholarships will not impact current NKU athletes.
“No [current] NKU students are losing scholarships. Once a student athlete signs with NKU, that offer does not change throughout their four years at NKU.” Best said. Best added that the recruit who announced their decommitment due to scholarship discrepancy never received a written offer from the University.
Best declined to confirm whether coaches were told to suspend all scholarships for future recruits. She did offer insight into how they may handle scholarships in the future.
“As far as scholarships go, like many mid-major universities, we are considering ways to consider future scholarship offerings given the NCAA House settlement regarding the ending of amateur sports.” Best said.
Best added that NKU does not plan to cut any sports programs within the university or add any sports in the near future, apart from the six that were agreed upon in 2023.
