Luke Yaklich's debut as UIC's head coach last season showed promise, but a combination of injuries and COVID protocol issues derailed any momentum the Flames could have had. While much of the starting lineup remains intact, including super seniors Michael Diggins and Jamie Ahale, Teyvion Kirk is no longer with the team, and a swath of new players have arrived to bolster Yaklich's depth in both the frontcourt and the backcourt.

It's been a wild past couple of seasons in Indianapolis but out steps two-year interim head coach Byron Rimm, and in comes long time Jaguar associate head coach Matt Crenshaw. Crenshaw did not only play four seasons for IUPUI, but he is the school's all-time leader in assists, as well as an assistant at the school for 12 seasons. He comes back to Indianapolis with a completely new roster from the last time he was in town (2018), returning only 35.7% of its scoring, and losing the three-headed monster of Marcus Burk, Jaylen Minnett, and Elyjah Goss. One of Burk, Minnett or Goss led the team in scoring in all but one game last season, and led the team in rebounds in every contest. But, this is exactly what the transfer portal is here for, and Crenshaw is using it. He brings in 3 of those, a lot of which are expected to run featured roles on the squad. Along with that, Crenshaw has strong Indianapolis connections and brought two local kids in late.
